6 Things You Could Still Do Even If You Don’t Feel like Writing

Being a writer does not always mean that you have to write all the time. There will be times when you just don’t feel like writing. It could be just a temporary lack of motivation or writer’s block. If you have writer’s block, you’ll have a harder time getting your groove back.

To help you combat this condition, you will need a specialized map that will help you navigate through writer’s block. With this type of map, you’ll be able to effectively handle the rigors of writer’s block.

Whatever the reason may be though, this does not mean that you can’t do other things that could improve your writing journey.

Here are 6 things you could still do, even if you don’t feel like writing.

  • Read new content

If you are not in the mood to write, this does not mean that you should just laze away and waste your time. Remember that if you want to achieve anything as a writer, you will need to devote as much of your time to the art.

If you don’t have the motivation to write as of now, you should at least be open to new sources of writing material. One of the best ways to do this is to read as much as possible. Make it a habit to read new content on a daily basis. Don’t limit yourself to just one genre either.

  • Update your author platform design

Your author platform is one of the most effective ways to expand your reach as a writer. Before you even release a book, it is already important that you have an author platform.

It is through this platform that you will reach out to potential readers and fellow writers. So if you are not in the mood to write, use your extra time to update your author platform design.

If you notice that the layout and the colors are a bit outdated, take the time to work on them. You could also look for new images and content to add to your author platform.

By taking the time to update your author platform, you won’t waste your precious time on useless pursuits.

  • Think up new writing ideas

There will be times when you are not in the mood to write. You might be in a rut, and you just don’t have the motivation to start the writing process.

However, this does not mean that you should just give up on writing altogether. You may not want to get down in the trenches and do any actual writing, but you could still do something positive and come up with new writing ideas.

Remember that your mind is a treasure trove of ideas. You just need to be brave and focused enough to dig them out. Take the time to just sit down and think about new ideas.

Look for a comfortable place to sit or lie down. Brew a cup of tea or coffee, and just brainstorm new writing ideas.

When you have these brainstorming sessions, it is always a good idea to be in a positive and hopeful state of mind.

Make sure that you have a notebook with you as well because you never know when a truly great writing idea comes up so you should be ready to write it down.

  • Talk to other writers

There will be times when you will feel confused about being a writer. You will wonder whether all the work you put in your writing projects or manuscript is worth it.

You may even lose your motivation and wonder why you are even writing at all. Don’t be ashamed if you are feeling this way, because almost every writer has felt this way.

It is normal to doubt your skills and think about quitting every once in a while.

If you are feeling down, and don’t have any motivation to write, it is a good idea to talk to other writers. If there are any writers within your community try to reach out to them.

Chat with them online or invite them for a cup of coffee. If you have the opportunity, you should try talking to a more experienced and established writer, because they would most likely have gone through this experience too, and they were able to overcome them.

By talking to other writers, you will also be able to learn new writing tricks and get great publishing advice as well. Conversations often lead to new and even better ideas. Even the simplest and most random of topics can excite the mind and can be a useful seed to grow your imagination.

Conversations can also be a way on how to stay motivated as a writer and to keep the momentum going. Reaching out to other writers may be somewhat intimidating and humbling, however, it is a worthwhile endeavor, especially for writers who are just starting out.

  • Organize your past works

If you have been writing for a long period of time, you would most likely have had a large body of work. So if you are not feeling particularly motivated to write, then now is the time to organize your past works.

Take a look at old notebooks and files in your old electrical devices. Although this may seem like a waste of time, it is in fact a great way to reignite your love for writing.

You may also find old gems that you could use in your author platform, and who knows? You might find a future bestseller in your past works.

  • Try out poetry

If you are having a hard time with long-term writing projects or a manuscript for a new book, why don’t you try out poetry? Writing a poem for the very first time may feel somewhat intimidating, however, if you give it a try, you’ll see that it is a lot of fun.

The rhythmical quality of poetry is quite different from the steadier and ordered pace of conventional writing. Writing poetry will also allow you to use your full vocabulary, and even get you in the mood to start on your old writing projects again.

There is also the possibility that if you write a good number of poems, you may even compile them and publish your very own poetry book. Overall, you will only stand to gain more if you start writing poetry.

Writing is definitely hard work, and there will be times where you won’t want to write. However, your lack of writing motivation should not stop you from doing something constructive. By doing these key activities, you’ll still be able to reach your full potential as a writer.
